The Extraordinary Deaths of Mrs. Kip by Sara Brunsvold

Rating: 4 out of 5.

A few months ago, I had the privilege of being a part of the cover reveal team for The Extraordinary Death of Mrs. Kip on Instagram. Ever since then, I’ve been eagerly looking forward to reading Sara Brunsvold’s debut novel!

Reader’s Thoughts:

I read this book in practically one sitting and was left moved to tears. This was such a sweet and heartwarming story.

The book follows Clara Kip, who has just moved into a hospice after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. And yet, even with the disease eating away at her, Clara maintains her bubbly, hope-filled, and spunky attitude, never missing an opportunity to love someone.

Aidyn is a rookie reporter who gets assigned Clara’s obituary. But as an unlikely friendship blossoms between the two, Aidyn quickly learns that there is way more to her assignment than first meets the eye. Mrs. Kip quietly steals into Aidyn’s life, and I loved the mentorship aspect to the book.

The Extraordinary Deaths of Mrs. Kip is a character-driven novel with an incredibly strong emphasis of Christian faith. The slow moving plot allow the reader to feel a sort of friendship with Mrs. Kip too, walking her day alongside her and soaking in her wisdom. This book is about death and dying, but at the core of the story it’s about how we can live victorious, even at the end.

Every page in this book is soaked with Biblical or faith-based references. In the past, I’ve found this style of writing to come across as cheesy or forced — as if the author was preaching rather than providing natural dialogue between characters. But in the case of Mrs. Kip, it felt authentic. Her character was written in such a way that these interactions felt natural, easy-to-read, and encouraging for the reader. Perhaps, this was because I myself have known a few “Mrs. Kip’s” in my lifetime too.

This story may hit upon heavier subjects but it is also a unique story with a big heart. For a faith inspired read, The Extraordinary Deaths of Mrs. Kip is available now!

Rating: 4 out of 5.

About the book:

(From the publisher) Aidyn Kelley is talented, ambitious, and ready for a more serious assignment than the fluff pieces she’s been getting as a cub reporter for the Kansas City Star. In her eagerness, she pushes too hard, earning herself the menial task of writing an obituary for an unremarkable woman who’s just entered hospice care. But there’s more to Clara Kip than meets the eye. The spirited septuagenarian may be dying, but she’s not quite ready to cash it in yet. Never one to shy away from an assignment herself, she can see that God brought the young reporter into her life for a reason. And if it’s a story Aidyn Kelley wants, that’s just what Mrs. Kip will give her—but she’s going to have to work for it.
