Hushbug Book Box
Summer 2024 Deluxe Box from Hushbug
This year I decided to test out a few of the book boxes that I’ve been following along with on social media, but haven’t yet tried. Up next on my list was the Hushbug Book Boxes. Since they’ve moved to a quarterly subscription, I thought their Summer Deluxe Box sounded ideal and was excited to see what was inside!
My Hushbug Summer Box arrived a few weeks ago and since then, I’ve tested out the items included. I was really happy with the overall feel, design, and quality of the items and box as a whole. Check out what was inside (and my full reviews) below!
*This box was not a gifted item. As always, all opinions and reviews expressed below are my own!
About the Hushbug Book Box:
Hushbug Book Box is a Canadian book box company that was originally specifically focused on the romance and rom-com genres. Since then they’ve branched out a little with their book choices (but still offer at least half romance picks) and currently have two different box options: a monthly mini box or a seasonal deluxe box.
I purchased the summer deluxe box which came with a newly released book (four options to choose from) as well as 5-7 curated items. Let’s take a look inside this Summer Deluxe 2024 box:
Only One Survives by Hannah Mary McKinnon
The Hushbug Book Boxes offer four different book choices for their Deluxe Boxes — at least two romance novels and a mystery or thriller. For this Summer Deluxe Box, there was a choice between The Ex-Vows by Jessica Joyce, The Rom-Commers by Katherine Center, Only One Survives by Hannah Mary McKinnon, and The Midnight Feast by Lucy Foley.
I chose Hannah Mary McKinnon’s newest thriller, Only One Survives. I thought there was a great selection of books this month but for me, it was an easy pick. McKinnon is one of my go-to Canadian authors and I was delighted to see this book as an option.
The only thing I think this box was missing was a signed bookplate from the author. That’s a personal preference (and not always possible) but it is something I love to see in book boxes as I think it adds that extra special feel.
Only One Survives is one of my most-anticipated reads for 2024. You can read more about this book, here!
BKIND Nail Polish
The first item I grabbed out of this box was the nail polish. This was my first time trying this brand of polish and I am a fan! The lavender color was light and perfect for a summer box. The polish went on surprisingly smoothly and I was really happy with the quality. I’m generally quite hard on my nails but got three days without chips, which felt like a win!
Body Bronzing Shimmer Lotion
This Body Bronzing Lotion gave my skin a glowy appearance and it certainly fit the summer box vibes. Coconut scents are always a favorite of mine and this had a light and tropical feeling. However, the lotion has a lot of shimmer to it and I found that the shimmer and bronzer tended to transfer a little while I was wearing it. For this reason, it was probably my least favorite item in the box but still makes for a fun product to use for special occasions (I’d just avoid using it with light-colored clothing!)
Jubilee Snack Bag Set
The next item to catch my eye in this box was a brightly colored snack bag set from Danica. These snack bags are reusable, food-safe, and came in two separate sizes. This was a really practical item that was easy to use and clean, and I loved the colorful fabric and cute rainbow pattern.
Elephant Sarong
There were a couple of larger items in this box, and this green, elephant-patterned sarong was one of them. This item is great for the beach and can be used in a variety of ways, making another great addition to a summer-themed box. The pattern is cute and the fabric seems durable enough to either wear or use as a beach towel.
Pina Colada Mix
I’m drinking this pina colada mix as I write this review and while it’s quite sweet, the flavor is nice. It was packaged well (arriving inside another ziplocked bag to prevent leaks) and was very generous in size. I think this was the largest drink item I’ve ever received in a book box.
Shortbread Cookies
One of the things I specifically love about Canadian book boxes is the fact that they highlight small Canadian businesses that I otherwise might not get the chance to hear about. These shortbread cookies came from The Nova Scotia Cookie Company and included three different, individually packaged shortbread cookies (original, blueberry, and chocolate chip.)
The cookies were exactly what you expect from shortbread — buttery and crumbly — and I especially enjoyed the blueberry flavor. I thought it was a lot of fun that we got to taste test more than one flavor, and I also really loved the sliding box packaging for this item.
Stainless Steel Wine Tumbler
While this will end up being a soda tumbler for me, this is a fun and practical item. The cup has a cute and summery pattern, feels durable, and has a stainless steel interior to help keep drinks cool. With its lid and straw, it’s great for traveling or using around the house.
Final Thoughts:
I’ve been following along with Hushbug Boxes for a while now and have always loved the stylish and well-curated boxes they put together. Because they’ve historically been more focused on the romance genre, it didn’t necessarily feel like the perfect fit for this only-occasional-romance reader. However, I really appreciate that they’ve branched out with their book offerings and are now including mystery and thriller options as well. (Which is why I finally took the plunge and grabbed one for myself!)
This Summer Deluxe Box included seven items plus a book and I loved the summery vibes. It felt thoughtfully put together and I enjoyed the mix of items. While this box was a little more expensive compared to some of the other book boxes I’ve purchased before, the fact that it’s only available quarterly makes it feel like more of a treat to splurge on.
As a Canadian, I love supporting Canadian book boxes, especially when they also specifically support and highlight other small Canadian businesses in their boxes — and Hushbug does that! This box introduced me to a few new products and offered some fun and practical items for summer.
I always have fun with book boxes and this one was no exception. I’ll definitely be grabbing future book boxes from Hushbug!
