The Prison Healer by Lynette Noni
We’re tackling a brand new genre for our October 2024 readalong! This time it’s a YA Fantasy novel — The Prison Healer by Lynette Noni. This dark and thrilling fantasy is the first book in the bestselling trilogy and is packed full of survival, intrigue, and a little romance. Whether you’re a long-time fantasy reader or new to the genre, we’re going to have a ton of fun reading and exploring this book together!
How does this readalong work?
A readalong means that we read the same book together at the same time. Our October readalong will take place from Thursday, October 24 – Tuesday, October 29. Each day of the readalong we will read a set of assigned pages and then discuss what we’ve read on the Discord server. (If you’re not a part of the Discord server yet, sign up for the readalong below and we’ll send you the link!)
The Prison Healer could fit the following 2024 prompts: #14: A grieving character, #19: A buddy read, #24: A cover without people on it, and #31: Includes a personal phobia.
About the book:
Seventeen-year-old Kiva Meridan has spent the last ten years fighting for survival in the notorious death prison, Zalindov, working as the prison healer.
When the Rebel Queen is captured, Kiva is charged with keeping the terminally ill woman alive long enough for her to undergo the Trial by Ordeal: a series of elemental challenges against the torments of air, fire, water, and earth, assigned to only the most dangerous of criminals.
Then a coded message from Kiva’s family arrives, containing a single order: “Don’t let her die. We are coming.” Aware that the Trials will kill the sickly queen, Kiva risks her own life to volunteer in her place. If she succeeds, both she and the queen will be granted their freedom.
But no one has ever survived.
With an incurable plague sweeping Zalindov, a mysterious new inmate fighting for Kiva’s heart, and a prison rebellion brewing, Kiva can’t escape the terrible feeling that her trials have only just begun.

Don’t like that there isn’t a second choice book. This has to many trigger warnings that make this a DNR book. I can’t believe this would be a good book for YA.
